Early Language and Literacy Specialist

 Deb Sutton, M. Ed.

At Region 4SST, the Early Learning and Literacy Specialist (ELLS) is Deb Sutton who came to the position with 20 years of supervisory experience in school districts and community non-profit early childhood and school-age child care programs. She has a M.Ed. Curriculum Instruction/Early Childhood Special Education from Cleveland State University.

As an Region 4 ELLS specialist, Mrs. Sutton’s work includes three areas of professional development for early learning educators comprised of the Preschool Core for Literacy, Pre-K/K SIRI literacy modules, and the Teacher Leader mentoring project.

Educators working in early childhood special education programs, community preschools, daycares, and Head Start will find that these professional development opportunities address the needs of all young learners. In addition to providing research-based strategies rooted in best practice, the format of the seminars encourages relationship building and collaboration among all early childhood professionals.

Overview of professional development provided under ELLS:

Preschool Core for Literacy – This is a 10-session comprehensive series that has been developed to assist in understanding the ways in which early childhood educators can provide quality learning experiences and intentional teaching strategies that support the early literacy development of all young children. This series also helps teachers "connect the dots" among Ohio’s Early Learning Content Standards, Get It, Got It, Go (GGG), Early Language and Literacy Classroom Observation (ELLCO), and best practices.

Teacher-Leader Project – The priority of this professional development is for educators who have completed the Preschool Core for Literacy to mentor/coach classroom teachers in implementing effective literacy strategies into their daily routines that will affect child outcomes. Participants will learn coaching techniques and create a progress portfolio that will illustrate teacher growth and the transferring of "additive knowledge" gained from state-wide professional development into research-based literacy practices in the early childhood setting.

Pre-K/K State Institutes for Reading Instruction (SIRI) – Each 12-hour module is designed to provide all early childhood educators including childcare, Head Start, preschool and kindergarten teachers with an in-depth understanding of the critical components of early literacy skills.
